Fishing out at sea is considered to be a dangerous activity and one dominated by men. Women who aspire to enter into such a field have a hard time finding employment on fishing vessels.
There is more to commercial fishing than fishing alone, it includes other activities such as processing, marketing and so forth. Women play a larger role on the business side of the fishing industry and the wives of fishermen, though indirect, are also a vital part in this industry.
Small scale fisheries that include gleaning activities and fishing from the shore involve more women than men and information on such activities are usually underestimated or overlooked. Thus having an impact when certain figures are not considered in policy making pertaining to sustainable management of fisheries.
