UNOC Voluntary Commitment – Promoting Gender Equality in Sustainable Fisheries Management and Development in Fiji

To support the implementation of UN SDG Goal 14, Women in Fisheries Network – Fiji has committed to Promoting Gender Equality in Sustainable Fisheries Management and Development in Fiji.

The objective of this voluntary commitment is to afford equal opportunity in training and other forms of capacity building to improve or acquire new skills for women in the fisheries sector. This commitment also seeks to recognize the full contribution of women to the fisheries sector and better involve women in the decision-making on the protection, use and management of fisheries resources.

Key deliverables include:

1) By 2020, WiFN-Fiji and partners will promote and encourage gender-sensitive data collecting, encourage research, and ensure information on women in fisheries is readily available to effectively inform policies and programs on sustainable fisheries and development.
  2) By 2020, and in line with the proposed Fiji National Fisheries Policy, WiFN-Fiji willimplement effective strategies and programs to support awareness-raising, training and other forms of capacity building, and support services for women in the fisheries sector.

The voluntary commitment which aligns itself with SDG 14 sub-goals 1, 2 and 3 is planned over a 3 year period (July 2017 – 2020) and will include working together with WIFN-Fijis network of partners , (including; Ministry of Fisheries, Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Fiji Locally Managed Marine Areas Network (FLMMA), Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) University of the South Pacific (USP), the Pacific Community (SPC)).
