Today the network was part of the Inaugural National Day Celebration for Women in Maritime.
Organised by the Fiji Women in Maritime Association (WIMA), the event is the first of its kind in the world.
With the theme, “OUR DAY, YOUR DAY! DAY FOR WOMEN IN MARITIME”, it was held at the Holiday Inn in Suva.
Chief Guest, Transport Minister Hon Jone Usamate opened the event and acknowledged the work of women in maritime.
Usamate further stated that he has had talks with the Employment Minister for the Maritime Sector to be a standalone sector with relation to the National Minimum Wages regulations.
He stressed that the current labor laws promote fair pay for fair work.
In attendance during the event as well was Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Hon. Mereseini Rakuita alongside Opposition MP Hon. Lenora Qereqeretabua.
According to the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji, there are currently 91 female seafarers in Fiji.
The Women in Fisheries Network – Fiji is also a corporate member of WIMA.
