Last two weeks, from the 26th – 30th January, WiFN-Fiji network members from Viwa Island, Bau and a secretariat staff member participated in a five-day Seafood Post-Harvest and Preservation Training held at USP Lower Campus along with representatives from Navotu Youth Club, Rewa and from the LMMA organization hosting representatives from Vunaniu, Serua and Mau, Namosi province.
The training was facilitated by Ms. Shirleen Bala and Ms. Sera Vaniqi, with valuable support from Ms. Madeline Kili Solo and Mr. Luke Jino of the Solomon Islands National University. This initiative was fully funded by the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency, FFA.
The training focused on reducing post-harvest loss by adding value to fish and other marine commodities. Beyond cooking, participants learned specialized methods that:
- Strengthen food security
- Enhance quality and safety through improved handling and processing
- Support local livelihoods by teaching valuable skills and creating potential income opportunities
- Contribute to developing premium seafood products for future markets
Currently, the bottled tuna produced through this process has a shelf life of one year, with ongoing efforts to extend this duration.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the facilitators, partners, and Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency, FFA for their support in empowering communities with knowledge and skills that build resilience and sustainability.
