Green Action Week is a global campaign to promote sustainable consumption. The event is celebrated annually from 30th September to 6th October.
In early October, the Consumer Council of Fiji organised an event to close the week long event which is the culmination of the Council’s Green Action Fund (GAF) 2019 Project in the Serua province.
Present during the event were Serua women from Serua Island, Galoa and Sauniveiuto. Celebrating the theme (project) “Harmful Effects of Plastic on Fiji’s Marine Ecosystem and Provide Alternatives Available to Replace Plastic Bags”, the women showcased locally crafted reusable alternatives to curb plastic waste.
WWF Pacific’s Alfred Ralifo in his speech stated that 98 per cent of plastics in the plastic ocean are dumped by other non Pacific Island nations.
According to the Green Action Week website, the theme for 2018 onwards is “Sharing Community”. Furthemore, the campaign wants to reignite cultures of sharing and collaboration, as a way to create sustainable access for more people, and at the same time reduce stress on the planet.
