Our partner organization, The Women’s Fund Fiji (WFF) this morning opened the Building Resilience for the Namara women through alternative income generating Activities – Training Workshop attended by 30 Women fisher participants from the Namara District The workshop spans 4 days covering training on Fabric Art, Contemporary Weaving, Jewellery Making and Tailoring and will run from the 02nd Tuesday to the 05th Friday of April 2024 at the St Vincent DePaul Parish Hall in Nausori. The training is facilitated by Ms. Angie Rakai-Niumataiwalu and her team with funding by the Women’s Fund Fiji Fund Fiji (WFF) Project.
In 2022, WiFN conducted an appraisal in the Tikina Namara Tailevu for Fisherwomen Communities on Children’s Education Needs & Parents Support for Children’s Learning, Health and Wellbeing which identified avenues to address problems with current patterns of care work, with a focus on reducing difficulties and redistributing responsibility for care work, thereby improving women’s lives.
The recommendations from the Appraisal report listed training on alternative source of livelihood such as sewing and tie and dye and vegetable gardening (amongst others) to take pressure off engagement in fishing and in the context of disaster recovery – to allow fishing resource to recover.
The four-day training will engage Namara fisherwomen in alternative income generation activities training programs offering valuable pathways for women to enhance their skills and participation. Participants are fisherwomen from the six villages namely Naisausau, Matamaivere, Nakorolevu, Naikalawaca, Tubalevu and Naikawaga.
We would like to acknowledge all the stakeholders: Women’s Fund Fiji, who in partnership with MamaCash has been supporting WIFN since 2018 Ms. Angie Rakai-Niumataiwalu & team and the Namara District women’s representative – our constituents who continue to give us the privilege of serving them.
