Seventeen fisher women from the province of Ra, Rewa & Tailevu attended a 2-day Training of Trainers on Climate Change and Disaster ready preparedness on the 30th – 31st May 2023 in Nausori. It was facilitated by WiFN-Fiji through the Australian Humanitarian Project.
It was an opportunity for the women to strengthen their capacities in resilience (CCA/DRR) on Climate Change, Disaster Risk Reduction concepts, activities, and approaches, hence equipping them with the relevant knowledge and practices for a more resilient Fiji.
The important prospect was also for the women to train their own communities on disaster ready and preparedness.
Losana Kalokalo, a fisherwoman from Nanukuloa, Ra stated that they were most grateful to be chosen for the training because it is an important topic that is needed to be addressed in most rural communities so they are more prepared and are alerted when a natural disaster occurs in their villages.
The women from the three provinces all shared their stories and their own perspectives about natural disasters and how it has affected their food, health, fishery and also in the tourism sector.
With this; WIFN-FIJI would therefore like to thank the women that were eager to attend the training and a sincere acknowledgement to our funders; OXFAM in the Pacific for their continuous support.
